The state’s November 2026 Midterm Election is coming soon.
KTOO, Alaska Beacon, Alaska Public Media and the Anchorage Daily News collaborated to publish a voter guide intended to help Alaskans make informed choices when they vote. Each news organization asked its readers, viewers and listeners this basic question: What do you want candidates to talk about? We brought those issues to the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, state Senate and state House.
Our guide allows you to see how they responded to questions about those topics and compare their answers. While some candidates did not participate, we reached out to all of them multiple times in multiple ways to ensure everyone had an opportunity to respond.
Under Alaska’s ranked choice voting system, in each race, voters can rank the candidates in order of preference on their ballot. If no candidate wins an outright majority of votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and those votes are then reallocated to second-choice candidates in what amounts to an instant runoff system. The process continues until a candidates receives more than 50% of the vote.
