The old adage, “No news is good news” seems to apply to the fate of the Douglas Post Office.
A year ago, the U.S. Postal Service included Douglas on its list of small post offices to be closed. That’s still all we know, according to Alaska District spokesman Ernie Swanson.
“It remains on the list for consideration of possible closure, but no action has been taken and there’s no time schedule for when a decision on that might be made,” Swanson says.
That’s the same information U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski just received from USPS Government Liaison Mary Ann Simpson.
The Douglas Post Office was not part of the so-called POSt Plan that went into effect in May to reduce hours of service in 13,000 low-traffic rural post offices across the country. Simpson says a decision on Douglas and four other Alaska facilities is still “on hold.”
In a letter to Murkowski, Simpson says, “Going forward, the Postal Service will evaluate how best to incorporate them into long-term plans for effective and efficient retail service.”
