The chief probation officer for Southeast Alaska says the biggest challenge since Ketchikan’s youth detention center closed has been getting the kids to Juneau. At times, there have been more kids than rooms and a staffing shortage.

The appropriation meets the full amount state law allows the CBJ to give the school district plus provides $925,700 for other programs and activities not tied to the state funding cap.

The smoke was thick but through the gaps, it didn’t look like much was left of the popular playground located in a park north of downtown Juneau.

About 30 different organizations and individuals put the fair together, including environmentalists and wildlife advocates.

Marchers rallied at the state Capitol and then walked to the Renewable Juneau Fair inside the Juneau-Douglas High School commons. They stopped at the federal building to mail postcards to lawmakers along the way.

Some middle school athletes believe a three-year ban on travel hurt their chances to grow.

Assistant Fire Chief Ed Quinto said construction underway in the building could have facilitated the fire’s spread, but firefighters quickly contained it.

Law enforcement can fine drivers in Southeast Alaska, Kodiak and the Aleutians for driving with studded tires.

The board voted 6 to 1 to lift the 2013 ban. The change means the school district’s administration can decide how to regulate sports travel.
