Southeast Alaska’s regional Native corporation is talking to federal officials about taking over land that’s now part of the Tongass National Forest. Sealaska is interested in selecting or trading for timber-rich forest lands within the region. Members of Alaska’s congressional delegation say they are working on the issue.

Southeast Alaska’s regional Native corporation has a plan to revitalize the area’s timber industry. Sealaska on Monday proposed putting most Southeast timber lands under the control of a Native-managed timber trust. That organization would oversee logging and marketing under a regional brand.
