KXLL Community Engagement Producer

KTOO is looking for a talented and creative media producer to join our team as the KXLL Community Engagement Producer.   This is a ¾-time (30 hours per week) position located in Juneau with the potential to become full-time.

KXLL ‘Excellent Radio’ is Juneau’s only AAA (adult album alternative) music station, broadcasting multi-genre contemporary music from all levels of the music industry, from major and independent labels to self-produced artists. The station is rooted in a deep passion for music in all genres, from soul, R&B, pop, rock, hip hop, jazz, EDM, and everything in between. The station thrives as a local presence in the arts, music, and culture of Juneau, spotlighting local and visiting musicians, artists, culture bearers, events, and organizations doing music and arts-focused work. The station aims to connect with all music lovers, with a particular focus on the 18 to 34 age demographic. KXLL prioritizes offering listeners a fresh music catalog in regular rotation combined with active engagement and contribution to the local music and arts scene. The station covers the local music and arts scene through live on-air conversations, online and social media channels, and engaging in local productions and music shows.

The KTOO family of stations recognize that nationwide public radio has a role in perpetuating historic social inequities embedded in our society. As a music and arts station, KXLL has the ability to be a leader in helping evolve past that history by reflecting our community’s rich cultural diversity. The station is at its best when it actively uplifts BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and historically minoritized artists and musicians, while retaining its core identity as a music station whose purpose is to nurture local music and art, and play excellent music.

The best applicant will be highly creative, collaborative, curious, and passionate about music and arts from culturally diverse artists.  The KXLL Community Engagement Producer will have the opportunity to put their own stamp on the station. This an opportunity to shine in work that is both important and fun.

Essential duties:

  • Produce and host a live, on-air music show, reflecting the overall sound and values of KXLL, following a weekly production schedule
  • Research and book guests for interview segments
  • Interview local and visiting musicians, artists and others about relevant community events
  • Actively engage in the Juneau community in-person and on social media (e.g., hosting a station booth at festivals, introducing local music performances at venues and events, regular posting on social media channels, etc.)
  • Support the KXLL volunteer program through recruitment and training, with the support from the KXLL Music Director and other KTOO staff.
  • Support the station’s on-air fundraising efforts

 Other opportunities include:

  • Working across departments on other station projects

Successful candidates will possess the following skills and competencies:

  • Deep knowledge of and passion for music, especially contemporary music spanning multiple genres
  • Broad understanding of and passion for engaging with the arts, culture, and music in Juneau and beyond
  • Lived experience and/or ability to authentically engage with people and artists from diverse cultures and worldviews.
  • Ability and/or willingness to learn basic Lingít phrases for on-air pronunciation.
  • Experience approaching your work with a lens that prioritizes social justice through the arts
  • Ability to collaborate well with co-workers, partner organizations, and community members
  • Ability to work under pressure and on deadline
  • Ability to operate standard media production equipment

The successful applicant will join our collaborative and creative team.  Your co-workers include other audio and video content producers, reporters and support staff.  The team, along with the organization, is committed to building a diverse staff and strongly encourages women and non-binary candidates; Alaska Native, Indigenous and people of color; people with disabilities and those with diverse economic and educational backgrounds to apply.
