Juneau School District leaders built a budget around an assumed $430 increase to the base student allocation. Dunleavy’s veto makes the one-time boost just $340 per student.

The late start would give teachers more time to work together without students. Administrators say it would also help elementary school teachers meet the new requirements of the Alaska Reads Act.

Most of it will go toward a growing transportation funding deficit caused by declining enrollment and flat funding from the state.

The details of the tentative agreement will be made public once it’s sent to union members later this week. Then, members will vote on whether to ratify it.

Hauser has been superintendent of the Sitka School District since 2019.

“The budget that you approve this evening is based on assumptions,” Superintendent Bridget Weiss told the board at the start of Tuesday’s meeting. “There are estimates built in here, and one of those is the increase to the BSA.”

School boards can also ask local governments for funding beyond that cap, and during last year’s budget process, the school board asked for $2.2 million. Now, the board is asking for an additional $2.5 million.

By the time the city’s finance department contacted the FBI, Juneau Police Department, CBJ Law Department and First National Bank of Alaska, it was too late to recover the funds.
