An architect hired by Alaska Housing Finance Corp. estimates it would cost more than $1.2 million to tear down the Gastineau Apartments.

If the city seizes the vacant apartments, it would look to convert them into affordable housing.

City officials are considering various actions against the owner of the condemned apartment building in downtown Juneau

A downtown cleanup is set for July 25th, an effort to begin to tackle problems in Juneau’s core.

The City and Borough of Juneau has given the owner of the Gastineau Apartments until May 1 to partially clean up the building.

“These firefighters and officers all performed heroically under extreme fire conditions,” said Rich Etheridge, CCFR Fire Chief.

Fosbee owners will have to work with the CBJ Building Department and fire marshal’s office to bring the building into compliance with fire and electrical codes.

Fire Marshal Dan Jager said he can’t pin down the exact cause, but after eliminating all other possible sources, an unattended candle likely caused the November 5th fire in downtown Juneau.
