Council member Sam Bergeron was walking home with his wife Linda Millard on Valentine’s Day when Officer Bryan Perez hit them with his police cruiser.

Police credit a recent push to end Alaska’s sexual assault kit backlog with identifying the suspect.

The first vandalism appeared over the weekend on a trail and skatepark near Schoenbar Middle School.

“This seems to be obviously pretty intentional. I don’t know if ‘planned out’ is the right term, but they certainly spent some quality time making some damage,” Ketchikan Police Department Lt. Andy Berntson said.

The fire marshal says heavy smoke, heat and flames hampered an effort to rescue those trapped upstairs.

How force is reported also varies by department. Some require a police officer to report the threat of force — such as if they unholster their gun and point it at someone. Others only consider actual physical force used.

While the body has not yet been identified, the Ketchikan Police Department sent an announcement Friday noting that the body was found close to the last known location of a young woman missing for about a month.

An active-shooter drill is planned for Thursday morning on board the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry Matanuska. During the training exercise, the ferry will be docked in downtown Ketchikan.
