Officials begin proceedings Thursday on whether to court-martial Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. He is charged with deserting his post in eastern Afghanistan and misbehavior before the enemy.

The Afghan army is now fully in charge of combat operations. NPR’s Tom Bowman heads out on a mission with troops as they engage the Taliban in one of its strongholds near the Pakistani border.

Bergdahl was released by the Taliban in exchange for five detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison. He was captured in 2009 after walking off his post in Afghanistan.

“A lot of attacks happen in Pakistan, like suicide bombings and stuff, but they never killed innocent kids who just went to school and never came back,” says Hassam Bazil.

The country was starting to take stock of a Taliban attack on a school that killed 145 people. Most of them were children.

The U.S. Army has launched an investigation into the “facts and circumstances” surrounding both how Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl disappeared in Afghanistan and his capture by the Taliban.

Organizers of a rally held in Bergdahl’s honor while he was a prisoner say they’re canceling this year’s event, citing backlash over the U.S. deal with the Taliban that freed him.

A day after Taliban officials handed him over to a group of American Special Forces, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is now receiving a medical evaluation at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
