Hayes belongs to the Kaagwaantaan, or wolf clan, on the Eagle side of the Tlingit nation. She is a teacher, a great grandmother, and a writer.
She has written several essays and books, among them “Blond Indian”–the winner of numerous honors including the HAIL Award, or (Honoring Alaska Indigenous Literature) and an American Book Award.
